Gran Canaria

Seemingly a continent in and of itself, with its many segregated climate zone, Gran Canaria is a paradise that millions of travelers and tourists flock to for respite and adventure. With beautiful historic architecture, and flawless beaches, Gran Canaria is an island like no other. A great number of towns, cities, and villages dot the land, and the mountains and tropical climates in some areas provide picturesque views and ideal sight-seeing weather. Youll have a hard time tearing yourself away from the coast, and the same goes for the mainland. The towns are full of marvelous and influential buildings of yesterday and today, and discovery of all the wonders in Gran Canaria will be like discovering a whole new world.

When to go:

The climate around much of the island is amazing. Year-round, the temperatures stay mostly consistent. In some areas, it rains more others, the cold in the winter is hardly noticeable, and the summer heat is swept away by the constant current of fresh air running from the shore to the mountains. Festivals occur more frequently throughout Gran Canaria than one can see and experience, but youll be pleased with most any activities going on in your part of the island. Without a doubt, you will be enjoying sunny days no matter what time of year.

Getting there and around:

Gran Canaria belongs to Spain, so its international regulations and customs procedures exist here like they do anyplace else. Flight connections run from Gran Canaria to numerous destinations in Spain and many European cities. Travelers flying from outside these vicinities will most-likely have to arrange for a stop-over flight.

From the airport its a quick taxi or bus ride into the heart of Gran Canaria (or the islands coastal resorts). Many travel agents arrange joint accommodations with travel services offering customers easy choices and less hassle.

The easiest way of traveling around Gran Canaria is to rent a car. This isnt usually advised, since traffic could be trouble, and parking is not always guaranteed. However, Gran Canaria is quite a large island and if you wish to explore much of it, youd be much better off with your own transportation available whenever you wish. If youre in the mood to stay in one region during your stay, opt for a bus or taxi (taxis are more expensive, but you get better service).

Attractions:

Culture is what dominates most from Gran Canaria emanating both from travelers and the indigenous of the island. Youll feel it in the marketplaces, on the streets, and even in the historic buildings throughout the towns.

We recommend a visit to La Vegueta, where youll see some really great architecture. You can see the Santa Ana Cathedral from much of La Vegueta, and upon arrival youll notice its size immediately. It was constructed many centuries ago, completed over a long span of time and incorporates Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassic designs. The inside of the cathedral is even more spectacular than the exterior. Youll find some amazing works of art, both sculpture and paintings in every chapel. However, the dedicated wing to fantastic and historic pieces is the Museo Dicesano de Arte Sacra (Sacret Art Museum). There are a large number of artifacts dating back quite a number of years, and youll find some remarkably well kept statues done by the sculptor Jose Lujan Perez.

In another sector if the island stands the Casa Museo de Colon. Not an official residence of the famed Columbus, Casa Museo de Colon is a palace once residence of a governor on the island that now is dedicated to the Spanish explorer. Beautiful exterior adornments and interior carvings make this museum very unique and highly prize not only by those in Las Palmas but by those throughout Spain.
