Gibraltar A tiny colony at the southernmost edge of the Spanish peninsula, Gibraltar is a feast for the eyes and the heart. Youll be captivated the moment you step off the plane and be enchanted by the simplicity of life here in this quaint city. Most of those in Gibraltar are a mix of Genoese, Jewish, Spanish, and British ancestry. Most of the locals speak either English or Spanish, or even a mix of what is now referred to as Spanglish. The land of Gibraltar has been around for thousands of year, even referred to frequently by the Greeks and Romans, labeled as one of the Pillars of Hercules. Today, however, there are many tourists who frequent the land for the beautiful sights and the people of the city and their one-of-a-kind cuisine.
When to go:
In Gibraltar, high summer can be quite hot and humid, reaching 82F (27.5C), but both spring and autumn are perfect for a visit. Also, youre almost guaranteed to witness the migration of both raptors and storks, as they go north in the spring and south in the fall. If youre looking to spend some time by the water during your stay, dont visit during January, as it gets quite chilly, and the coastal winds hardly let up.
Getting there and around:
Gibraltar Airport is located very close to the city centre. In fact, it is so close that, if you were to travel from the border to the city centre, youd find yourself crossing the runways on the way there! This is very beneficial to the traveler, since youll be pleased to know that Gibraltar can be traversed entirely on foot.
Getting around town is fairly simple. If you cannot walk to your destination, then a few bus lines will probably do the trick, and there are even a few car rental agencies if you want to do a little more exploring of the wilderness of the Spanish land. A cable car is also available to take you on an amazing sight-seeing adventure.
Attractions:
If youre interested in events which talk place on in town, Gibraltar hosts an annual flower show in April, an arts festival that goes on through much of May, and a drama festival, for those yearning for a bit of theatre.
Europa Point is a wonderful place to being exploring Gibraltar. Its on the southern tip of the land, and there youll find a beautiful lighthouse, and a Christian Shrine and a mosque. The mosque holds free guided tours, and the Christian Shrine of Our Lady of Europe is open to the public as well. The lighthouse offers great views of the city.
The one and what seems like the only museum in Gibraltar, logically labeled Gibraltar Museum, is home to a great number of historical, military, and architectural displays. The military displays show the battles that have occurred here throughout Gibraltars history, even before Gibraltar received its name. On-site are a Muslim bathhouse, and a model of the Rock. British fortifications and gates surround the museum.
The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is a beautiful place to spend the day hiking, walking along the many footpaths, and even walk the birds migrating from the Rock. A one of a kind animal youre almost guaranteed to encounter is the Barbary macaque. These are the only wild primates in Europe, and much of the time they hang around the cable car stations at both the top and bottom.
