Gdansk

Having begun as a port city more than one millennium ago, Gdansk is said to be the most intriguing of all historic sights on the Polish coastline. Touching the Baltic, the city is provided with a praiseworthy climate which thus lends Gdansk a helping hand in providing a memorable stay for its visitors. Though it is often overlooked when sized up against the nation's capital and other large historical venues such as Lodz and Krakow, Gdansk instead focuses on offering views those further inland lack. Industrial by nature, Gdansk is a city who's primary purpose is still to cater to seaborne vessels, yet the areas for which it is known best can be summed up as nothing less than contemporary. Of course, it's highly unusual to find a major trade and commerce center to boast fully-functioning aged docks, but the contrasts of old city and new could not be more visually evident. Some enjoy the changes of scenery; some do not. We at Flight Comparison tend to look at the upside rather than rail a place for its negatives, but one generally can't see the beauty in massive iron and steel containers amidst even larger carriers boasting the same formulas. One certainly cannot find fault, however, in Gdansk's oldest district. A network of centuries old churches, museums dedicated to trumpeting Polish efforts against the Nazis in WWII, and memorials for the scientists, thinkers, and others who've pioneered civilization in one way or another, this block of weathered goodies will almost guarantee a change of heart in one's taste for the city. Stay for the stories. Stay for the sights. Stay for the experience. Book your flight to Gdansk today.

When to go:

Providing many European cities with beautiful summers (and all other warmer months, really), the Baltic Sea is a godsend for all who reside near or along its edge. One of the most southern cities to coexist with the body of water, Gdansk is given a relatively good series of seasons - albeit easily distinguishable from one another. If we were to arrange your travels for you, the warmest months would certainly be our first choices, though the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are also periods in which Gdansk shines.

Getting there and around:

Now, the Polish may be crazy about synonyms, but when it comes to landmarks and chief establishments, they should keep to singular terms. Whether you're headed for Port Lotnicky Airport or Lech Walesa terminal, you'll be arriving at the same place, so try to stifle your confusing the best you can. Once you're here, things get much easier, and with taxi, bus, and rental car services all awaiting travelers day and night, it's good to see Gdansk up and at 'em when it comes to transit via tarmac. Gdansk's center is fairly compact, making roadway traffic more of an irritant than a guide. Things do expand quite a bit the further out you go, in which case taxis and buses are both worth utilizing. Like any industrial European city, Gdansk's congestion is hardly something you'd like to navigate solo. Rent a vehicle at your own peril.

Attractions:

Go back some 600 years and enter Gdansk's Town Hall. Though it is hardly in its original form (heavily restored), the improvements to both its exterior and interior are deemed by many to add to its image rather than detract from it. After shopping for mementos in the form of thermometers, etc. - Gdansk is the birthplace of Gabriel Fahrenheit after all - you can visit the harbor to see another tribute to 182 soldiers who held out to Nazi bombers, troops, and a ship for an entire week. The memorial is located at the mouth of the harbor at Westerplatte.
