Getting there and around:

Though it is the capital of Madeira, flights to Funchal are not entirely frequent, which means youre probably going to have a tricky time finding your way /to/ the city. But when you do arrive, youll be please to know that the airport is right by the waterside its quite beautiful actually and its near the heart of the city too. Travel to hotels and other destinations from the airport can be provided by buses and taxis, and neither is very expensive. Buses, of course, do arrive and leave at set times, so if youre in a hurry, hail a cab.

When you walk out onto the streets of Funchal after getting situated within your accommodations and such, youll immediately notice that it is entirely possible to walk your way throughout the city. It may take some time, but the rewards of doing so are great. The sights are wonderful along the way (no matter where you are or what street youre on) and interacting with the locals is half the fun! Youll experience more of the city this way, and you wont miss a thing. If you must have faster transportation, we suggest finding a cab. Theyre much easier than finding a bus, or a bus stop.

Attractions:

Funchal is not your typical beautiful city. Its more, much more. There is a diverse array of gardens all around the city, and beautiful buildings with great mixes of modern and historical.

The botanic gardens are a great place to start your exploration of the city (though dont stay too long, you may start believing youre in a tropical wilderness). Here you can see over 2000 kinds of plants, most brought from around the island itself. Fruit trees are scattered around the gardens, from papaia to mango. You can take your time strolling through the gardens or even explore the science and cultural centre that the gardens hold.

Funchals Japanese gardens are beautiful. Located in the hills, the vegetation brought from various palaces, aquatic life, and birds give the gardens the aura of a wonderland. The Japanese-style huts here accentuate the area perfectly.

Taking a ride on the Funchal Cable Car is a great way to spend part of your day. The cable car rises up the hills into the mountains above the city, where lies Monte, another town in Madeira, and back down to the station in Funchal.

The cathedral in Funchal is beautiful sight. Its not massive, but its fitting for the area within which it is encompassed. It was built around the time that Funchal was established (1514), and has an exquisitely carved ceiling one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
