Fresno

Known for being one of California's most laid-back cities, Fresno is only a bore for those deemed unable to relax. With thousands of acres of national forest (Sierra National Forest, to be exact) close by and a backyard of wildflowers, vineyards, and produce plantations, it's definitely hard to find a downside worth a blurb. Fresno's home is in central California, situated rather lazily within what is known as Central Valley. The city has proven fruitful as the West Coast USA has had a jump in grape (and whatever other stuff they grow here) demand, and clever marketing has put the city's own Guild winery among the top in the country. Dried fruits are also a large industry in Fresno. (Look to Sun Maid for the stats.) What will certainly strike some as odd is Fresno's temperate climate. Many would consider its position - particularly as far inland as it is - to make the city susceptible to dry, burdensome summers. Fortunately, perhaps because of its blessed placement inside the Central Valley, Fresno is relieved from the majority of the climatic effects experienced by California's flatlands. If you show intrigue for the Golden State's cultivation practices and you're torn between both the celebrated lands of the Napa and Central Valleys, try the latter for taste. Though it may not be the producer of the more popular blends to come out of the West Coast, the highlights here in and around Fresno are too many to pass by.

When to go:

The Central Valley is somewhat chilly in winter, but comfortable nonetheless. Spring and autumn are both candidates for "Best Season of the Year," but the latter has got a tough number to follow in terms of benefits and provisions. Spring offers visitors a wonderful, blooming landscape, complete with choice fruit and vegetable fields in the prime of their annual cycle. Autumn, on the other hand, provides a short period of splendid colorful collages, where hikers' pathways are strewn with bouquets of fallen leaves whose only Achilles heel is dampness - the culprit of the occasional "slip and fall."

Getting there and around:

More international travelers will recognize the name Yosemite than Fresno, and in order to stifle any confusion, the makers of the region's air hub coupled the two names for your convenience. You won't find the terminal a minute from downtown Fresno, but it's close enough not to cause immense agitation on the part of budget-conscious consumers opting for buses outside the gate instead of roomy overpriced taxis. You'll need a car of your own in order to get the full scope of Fresno, its suburbs, and the national parks, rivers, etc. in the area. If you'd like to squeeze every last bit of fun out of Fresno's closely-knit attractions (in town), you can get by with public transit, but don't say we didn't lay out any recommendations if you come across a slow period of the day!

Attractions:

If there's one activity you should make time for while in Fresno, it is a trip along the Fresno County Blossom Trail. Roughly 62 miles in length, this strip of trodden earth will take you through the region's agricultural world, passing from fields of golden and red grapes to hills draped in colors beautiful enough to get some individuals to whip out a canvas and some oils along the way!
