Freeport As the capital of Grand Bahama Island and one of the premier destinations in the Bahamas for tourists, Freeport has a lot to live up to - and it does. Since its conception, Freeport has been a resort haven with great style and an enormous variety of activities that continue to attract travelers year-round. Those on tight budgets can have as wonderful a time as those seeking the biggest and the best that the city has to offer. Nightlife in Freeport is easily the best on the island, and we couldn't imagine a better shopping district to go with your day on the beach. Almost everything is within walking distance, making for an easy, carefree experience, though depending one what hotel you have reserved a room at, you may need to utilize the busing system or a taxi, and downtown is more crowded than one might expect. Nevertheless, Freeport is a great place for vacationers with simplicity in mind, and locals couldn't be more accommodating. After you've given away your dollar bills for the hospitality, you can offer up more change at the slots in Freeport's Bahamia Casino. Take a stroll along the International Bazaar, where you'll meet and greet folks of an incredibly wide cultural spectrum. Whatever it is you choose to do in Freeport, you can be sure that a great time will be waiting with open arms. Choose Freeport as your next destination, business or pleasure, but don't forget to pack the sunscreen!
When to go:
Designating a "Best Time" to visit the Bahamas is a tricky task. It has always been know and taken as a year-round spot in the Atlantic where travelers can get away from the sub-freezing temperatures of the north in winter and take a break from one's routine. Climate patterns change ever so slightly here, and while it is true that the north is a bit chillier than the south, the dip is only noticeable in mornings and evenings. When winter hits the Bahamas, the days are still full of warm and sunny conditions, but step into the water and well...let's just say a dip is all you'll be taking during this season. Most travelers come to Freeport to escape their daily routines, and most who do so come during summer; if you're looking to beat any sort of crowding, give spring or autumn a try.
Getting there and around:
Grand Bahama Airport seems to think that it can compete with Nassau's terminal in quantity and quality, but it doesn't boast without backing it up. Flights come and go from international locations in Europe and North America, and even a few connections to Asia can be found here. To add a bit of perspective to the formula, Freeport is the second-largest city in the Bahamas, therefore easiness in travel is to be expected. The airport is home to a number of restaurants as well as completely duty-free shopping (even many places in the city itself follow international trade exceptions). Though many sites in Freeport are within walking distance of each other, the city is not compact by any means. Sure, the International Bazaar is basically the world crammed into a ten-acre complex, but the economics here are run just as much by the commercial and residential sectors. To see everything in the city it'll take you about a week if done expediently, and to do so you'll need to use the public transit system, which consists mostly of buses as well as a few trains. Buses tend to be crowded, but unless you want to hand over your lunch money for a taxi ride across town, it's best to deal with the cheapest methods.
Attractions:
If you're a big kahuna or just feel like gaining entry to the best of the resorts on Grand Bahama, you can head on over to the Royal Oasis Golf Resort & Casino to work on your swing, soak up some rays by enormous pools, or even get lucky streak at a blackjack table. Just because Freeport is a grand center of buildings and more buildings, nature has a place among the stone edifices. Take a bus over to the Garden of the Groves, where you can enjoy a peaceful day among the flowers and waterfalls. For a larger expanse of greenery, give the Rand Nature Center a day and it'll give you complete nature trails to tread.
