Fayetteville

Overlooked by Mount Sequoyah, Fayetteville, Arkansas is a city of great regional importance, first and foremost because of its academic body (University of Arkansas). Celebrated by Arkansans for its beauty and its historic charm, there is neither a lack of coffee houses nor Victorian abodes here. Its location inside this southern state is a strong selling point as well. When visitors come to southern USA, they more or less despise the incessant summer heat (the time of year when most do obtain windows of opportunity for vacations and other such journeys) and commission themselves to finding that special source of southern flavor and comfort. Fayetteville - at least to the east - takes on a grid layout sprawling north and south, but despite its rather ordinary arrangement, its images are rarely duplicated anywhere else. Within its residential districts, homes are quaint masterpieces, showcasing the best architectural accoutrements found anywhere in the region. Walk the campus of the university and spend your hours taking in an atmosphere ripe with intellectualism. If the masses of literary and historic texts have got you overloaded and groggy, make a brief stop in a corner caf (presumably a Starbucks, of course) and proceed to one of the city's parks where you can snuggle up to an aged oak or find some space on a bench to watch a seemingly less-frenzied array of city dwellers go about their days. Offering nothing of a spectacular set nor leaving one with a void in need of filling, Fayetteville is a surely a departure from your typical destination. Perhaps such characteristics are the grounds of visitors' love for this city....

When to go:

Like most southern states of the US, Arkansas sees its share of ups and downs. Whether heat waves makes their presence known or a deep chill is in the cards in mid-January, you can be sure Arkansas has had extreme occurrences upon its land and within its skies more than it can say. Fayettville, situated in its northwest sector, experiences much milder summers than its siblings to the south, and though winters in the region show quite low average temperatures for a place of such latitudinal positioning, they are bearable with the help of an extra layer of cotton or two.

Getting there and around:

Considering its rather diminished status amongst the state capital, Little Rock - and its neighbors: Benton and Jacksonville - it's no wonder why the governing bodies of Arkansas decided to construct a regional airport for the entire northwest, rather than singling out Fayetteville as an exception. Nonetheless, generalities have not hindered access between Fayetteville and NWARA (Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport). While buses do provide ground transit between airport and city, you're better of opting for a taxi or rental car.

Attractions:

Home to its own museum and fine arts center, the University of Arkansas is undoubtedly the city's most prized possession. In addition to its being a beautiful campus, especially at blooming season, you can spend some time indoors at theatre and/or at a musical performance, depending on the school's schedule. Maybe it is just a trait attributable to Arkansas, but whether one is a visitor or local in Fayetteville, the pull of city parks is peculiarly strong. Perhaps the prevalence of shade is the dominating factor in this finding. Whatever the case, you have many choices as to green patches within the cityscape; Lake Fayetteville Park is the crown jewel.
