El Paso

Arguably the most Spanish of Texas's cities, El Paso is a place to which most of its historical chapters can be attributed to the desert past its southern border. Being the 4th largest municipality in the state, it is not quite so easy to pass over. However, just as mentionable is the ease with which one can move about its layout, void of any significant troubles or chance of getting lost. One can attribute the rather likable weather in El Paso to its position between mountain ranges, and its premeditated placement along the Rio Grande makes it that much more appealing as a destination for international travelers and regional citizens on retreat. The desert is ripe for heat waves, and El Paso is not without its moments of fatigue, however its natural surroundings offer a welcome respite that fellow Texan centers can only wish for. Some find El Paso unappealing simply for the prevalence of Mexican cuisine that has seeped in over the border and into many of its restaurants, but those with affinities for jalapenos and other spicy selections will come to think of the city as a haven for culinary delights. Of course, there are always plenty of establishments offering trademark American dishes for trippers who don't wish to stray far from convention during their stays. Never putting on an unauthentic show for newbies to its grounds nor ever making attempts at putting some shine on its shoes or a few more stars on its streets, El Paso is Texas in every sense of the world - with a few bucket-loads Mexicana for good measure.

When to go:

Well, it's hot in spring in El Paso; the city's assuredly simmering in the summertime; and you can be that autumn isn't going to show a few snowflakes anytime soon. Winter, on the other hand, is markedly different. This isn't to say that you'll need any particularly heavy garments if you're flying in between the months of December and February, but it's safe to say that the sun is far less intense during this period. Days are shorter at this time of year, but you just might be willing to forego plans for lengthy excursions in the wilderness for the opportunity to leave your SPF tube at home.

Getting there and around:

It'd be quite odd for a major city on the border of two of the world's most influential nations not to standardize itself with an international airport, and thankfully, El Paso has done right. El Paso International Airport, a busy networking center for the region (and beyond), deals with hundreds of flights per day, and it seems the numbers will only rise. If your arrival is marked for a busy time of year for El Paso, try keeping with public transit for the sake of retaining a morsel of sanity.

Attractions:

Europe, Mexico, and the US have all had their say as to what is displayed inside El Paso's Museum of Art, and praise for their creation continues to pour in because of it. Three of a total of five galleries are reserved for specific periods and origins, with 17th-19th-century Mexican pieces, 13th-18th-century European highlights, and 19th-20th-century American inspirations each spotlighted separately. Contemporary works abound here, as do a number of sculptures, specialty items, and temporary exhibits. Think a trek along first settlers' pathway sounds like a fun idea? Spend a day roaming between historic sites along the El Paso Mission Trail. Created in the 17th century, an extensive hike will bring you to a few missions that have remained active to this day.
