Edinburgh

Over the past few decades, Edinburgh has transformed itself from just an average European capital to a hub for travel and shopping. Most come to Edinburgh simply for the architecture, what with its castle, the prevalence of Georgian structures and a landscape that will stun you to your core. The city is built around volcano long past its shelf life and throughout the grid you'll come upon a beautiful contrast of dark rock and budding greenery. It's the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the finest of Scotland. There's never a lack of stories to tell of its past, and because Edinburgh has been involved in numerous confrontations with neighboring Englanders you'll get to see unique timelines in the Museum of Scotland which note the numerous shifts of power that have come to these parts of the world. You can cycle through the best public park in the region or take on spendthrift ways on the boulevard of boutiques here. Whatever you choose to do in Edinburgh you can be sure that the city will give you the best it's got. You'll have to come to partake in the experience, though, so book your flight today!

When to go:

Edinburgh is best when it's warmest; it is also the most crowded during the brightest season. Given that a compromise will have to take place to enjoy the fruits of the city without sacrificing much time in the way of long lines, etc, you'll have to find a sliver of time to come at either the start of the high-season or its last days. Daylight does tend to stick around longer in autumn than spring, and events reach their peak in both August and September so you'll have more of a chance to take part in the remains of what are the best festivals of the year. Beware: hotel vacancies are harder to come by in the second half of the year, so book well in advance if you'd like any shot at getting a good deal on a room.

Getting there and around:

All major cities in England offer direct access to Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport is also friendly with a number of other European nations and their capital cities, and it's not very hard to find a connection to/from Asian cities either. The terminal is quite modern, and hosts a number of restaurants, some of which offer rather delectable dishes. Transport services are typical of any major international airport - bus, taxi, car rental agencies, and if you've booked a stay at one of Edinburgh's high-falutin' hotels, you'll most-likely be provided with pick-up and drop-off service. Most people will tell you that the best way of getting around the city is by bus, and while that is definitely a wonderful option to save some cash while roaming about the grid, you may find it difficult to follow the city's schedule and after some time you'll probably resort to renting a bicycle to enhance your freedom of travel. Of course, the city has a good share of steep inclines, but there are many ways to get around without breaking much of a sweat.

Attractions:

When travelers first arrive in Edinburgh, a top priority item is obtaining a panoramic glimpse of the cityscape. There's no better place in town than to do so atop Calton Hill. Towering above most of the city (apart from the occasional structure jutting much further towards the clouds), Calton Hill gives you an all-inclusive scope of Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood, Arthur's Seat, and many more districts and sights. Edinburgh is typically the next stop, and though it is quite a climb to reach its grounds by foot, there are tours that are organized around and inside the structure which offer busing to/from the city's main depot as well. While Edinburgh Castle has a past that stretches back before the 6th Century, you may end up focusing more on the expired volcano on which it sits. Views are also exceptional from the upper-most heights of the Castle. For more traces of lava you can traverse the 1 square mile of Holyrood Park where you'll come upon everything from sports fields to dark woods. Adventures await.
