Dusseldorf

Dsseldorf is a beautiful, somewhat extravagant city in the heart of Germany. It is said to have the highest per-capita income level in the country. But that does not take away from its charm, the friendliness of the people, and the chaos of a great commercial city. There are lots of skyscrapers, modern buildings intertwined with old architectural marvels, and everyone on the streets seems to pay no notice to these easily observable characteristic, though they know they live and work in a great metropolis. Even though Dsseldorf is not the capital of Germany, the impact of its banking and commercial districts say that it plays a strong part in the nations well-being.

When to go:

Like nearly every other part of Germany, Dsseldorfs climate is simple. It is hot in the summer, cooler in spring and autumn, and freezing in winter. Since this is so, its fairly easy to decide what time of year youd like to book your flight. We enjoy Dsseldorf in the spring, though if you dont mind braving the heat in the summer, there are usually a number of activities and festivities that go on, which you might find an interest in.

Getting there and around:

When traveling to Dsseldorf, chances are you will be flying into Dusseldorf International Airport, which is very close to the city. Many flights are direct, although from certain locations, you may have to take a stop over in Frankfurt first.

At arrival youll be greeted with many services. All are great, speedy, and efficient; designed to make your experience here in the city more pleasant (and the fact that the city can afford to provide such wonderful service). You can travel by rail via the S-Bahn 7 to Dsseldorfs main rail station (leaving every 20 minutes), or you can take a bus or taxi ride to your desired destination.

Traveling within the city is simple if you follow this rule: use public transportation. A series of S-Bahn railways serve the city, running very efficiently and quickly, and you can ride buses and trams as well, all with a Tagesnetzkarte (a full-day visitors pass). They are fairly cheap, and the worry-free way of getting around the city with unlimited rides.

Attractions:

Standing as one of the largest museums, full of a fantastic array of collections and one-of-a-kind pieces, is Kunstmuseum Dsseldorf. Here you will find pieces by renowned artists such as Rubens and Caspar David Friedrich. The collection of prints and drawings reaches higher than 80,000 in count, and there are vast numbers of ancient bronze and ceramic items. Textiles are also one of specialties of the Kunstmuseum Dsseldorf.

Another museum, or museums, that are definitely worth noting are the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen: K20 Kunstsammlung am Grabbeplatz. Housed under one roof, the two museums are divided; one housing the older pieces, and the other more contemporary. The museum boasts about their collection of Paul Klee paintings, probably because he once taught at Dsseldorfs National Academy of Art (Paul Klee is a famous Swiss painter). There are works by Picasso and Matisse here, and well as a few by Pollock. In fact, a few American pieces are displayed in a separate gallery altogether.

Many find Dsseldorf to be a hotbed of fashion, and you wont think anything else once you visit the districts that are home to some world-renowned designers. Along these streets, you will find stores and boutiques for just about anything, from high priced couture wear, to your average local pharmacy.
