Durban The city of Durban is one of the most sought out destinations for travelers and tourists in South Africa. This seaside metropolis boasts numerous attractions for the whole family, and exciting adventures await anyone willing to go to extremes. The tourism business in Durban is big on sport and activities, but has a multitude of sights that will surely interest those looking for a history less or even just to admire some magnificent architecture. Durban has it all, and a beautiful landscape to boot!
When to go:
The weather in Durban is amazing year-round. The air stays warm, and almost never becomes too hot for those outdoor excursions. The cool ocean breezes make the days weather exception as well. Most people flock to the beaches during the summer, so if youd enjoy a little seclusion during your trip, youd best avoid this season. Your best bet of enjoy all the benefits of Durban, would be to travel during spring, although autumn runs a close third either season is a wonderful time to visit the city.
Getting there and around:
Durban International Airport is quite a distance away from the city centre (15km), although transportation is always available to speedily take you into Durban. Taxis are available 24/7 outside the terminals, and the airport bus service is available most of the day. The bus service is obviously cheaper, though if youve arrive after-hours or just need to get to where you need to go quickly, then taxis are your best option. Renting a car is also an option, though not recommended.
Getting around is a breeze, and choosing between bus and taxi is really up to you. There are benefits to both as well as downsides. If getting to a bus stop becomes difficult or too time consuming, take a taxi.
Attractions:
The Umgeni River Bird Park may be out of the way to some, but we put it at the top of the list of our sights-to-see. Rates as one of the top bird parks in the world, its a fascinating place to walk though (some exhibits you actually can walk though!), and more than 300 species live here in the aviaries. Tropical plants and trees fill the exhibits, providing a beautiful setting to watch these amazing creatures go about their days. It may get loud, but dont be surprised if at time you find yourself forgetting that these birds are living in a man-made habitat. There is a bird show when the demonstrations can become quite extraordinary.
A great museum to visit is the apartheid museum, or Kwa Muhle Museum. The exhibits here are very moving, and some provide aural descriptions. The citys history is profoundly displayed here, with heavy emphasis on the segregationist ideals that were a part of the society here for so long. Anyone interested in the history of the land, and to see the progress of society, from before, during, and after the apartheid regime must visit this establishment. One of the highlights is the exhibit titled Durban System. In detail, youll learn about, in some cases, individual lives and how those affected by apartheid changed the course of the entire countrys history.
Another notable site to visit is the Durban Art Gallery. Though it may not house the grandest collection of pieces in the world, the art and crafts on display are said to be best representative of the history of the people of Africa. Both traditional and contemporary art is housed here, and you may be able to catch a temporary exhibit, which usually run every first Friday of each month.
