Doha

Qatars capital city, Doha, has an ideal location on the peninsula jutting into the Persian Gulf. It was once a fishing village, but now has transformed into a bustling center of commerce and governmental activities, and is now home to more than 80% of Qatars population. It is a wonderful blend of beautiful landscape, weather, and attractions. Doha does have many aspects resembling other middle-eastern cities, thought a few characteristics set it apart in quite an exquisite way. There are of course deep Islamic roots in the people, but there is a sense one gets when traveling throughout the city, that tolerance, acceptance, and friendliness to other cultures and people is high, and you will find yourself fascinated by the marvels the city as well as the people have to offer.

When to go:

The weather here is similar to many locations around the Persian Gulf. A hot tropical climate rushes in during the summer, and stays for an extended time, but then in autumn the days become warm, very comfortable, and not as humid as one would expect from Dohas place on the map. Both spring and autumn are wonderful times to visit Doha. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and youre sure to be pleased with whichever choice you make.

Getting there and around:

Dohas airport is not far from the city centre, only about 5km, so a quick taxi ride will get you to your destination. A benefit of the taxis serving the airport is that the official rates are displayed; no bargaining or haggling for a price is required. You can also choose to rent a car (a few internationally known agencies are located within the airport), and the convenience of banks, shops, etc., are all at your service.

Getting around Doha is easy, and we recommend, if you chose to get into the city via taxi, you continue doing so. Theyre quick, reliable, and the drivers almost always know where youre going, no matter how well you speak Arabic or English. There are buses available, thought they get quite crowded, and are somewhat slow. But if you wish to save some cash, this is the way to go.

Attractions:

One of the major attractions in Doha, and one of the citys premier, is The Corniche. This area of the city spans more than 7km of Doha Bay, and is littered with beautiful palm trees, benches, and great public spaces, allowing you do any number of fun or relaxing activities. Stay here the whole day if you like! There are plenty of shops, eateries, and more to make your day effortless and enjoyable, all within close proximity of wherever you may be along the bay.

An interesting site in Doha is the Ethnographic Museum, a.k.a. The Wind Tower House. It was first built in 1935, and later restored. The entire structure is open on all four sides, providing interesting perspectives, from within and outside the tower. Its massive size is sure to strike you as extraordinary as well.

There are plenty of water sport activities to take part in by the seashore in Doha too. You can rent a boat, a jet-ski, waverunner, or any other number of things to make your day fun and exciting without even noticing the hours slipping by.
