Detroit The city of Detroit has been the steel capital for ages, as well as the USs Motor City. Nevertheless, all the grit that has trademarked this US/Canada border locale does not take away from its charm, its modernity, and its friendliness to the common traveler. If youre looking for a pleasant time in a city full of festivals, cars, landmarks, and cultural hotspots, then Detroit will surely be a wonderful choice as your next destination.
When to go:
We recommend you visit Detroit in spring or autumn for simple reasons. You want to avoid winter, because its cold here, very cold. And in the summer, its hot and humid. Besides, the landscape of Detroit is really quite beautiful; when the flowers and foliage come to bloom, they make the city seem much warmer and friendlier (Detroits population experiences the same as well). Autumn, or early autumn to be particular, is also a great time to visit, as many festivals are still going on.
Getting there and around:
Detroits airport (Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport), known to most as Metro Airport, is located quite a distance away from the city (20mi/32km). However, this is a major hub for both domestic and international flights, so youll be pleased by the quick transport options the airport avails to you. You may rent a car, which we do recommend, as - even though it is known as motor city, and you might presume traffic would be endless parking is surprisingly easy to find, in almost any district and/or location. Another option is the shuttle service that transports you from Metro Airport to downtown Detroit.
Getting around the city is simple. Though you might expect the city streets to be littered with classic American cars, with people reminiscing about the heydays of the automotive boom that held this American city up so highly, the streets are not as congested as one may have thought. Youll be pleased with the amount of parking available, and youll see why we recommend renting a car to travel in and around Detroit.
Attractions:
The first destination, or destinations I should say, are the cluster of establishments that make up Detroits Cultural Center. Here youll find a few world class art galleries and museums. One gallery, in the Detroit Institute of the Arts, has a collection of pieces that dates back more than 5000 years, with its highlight being the Diego Rivera mural in the Institutes garden court. It takes up all four walls, and shows the citys automotive and steel industries in an interesting perspective.
Not far from the Institute stands the Detroit Historical Museum, a place dedicated to showing a chronological view of the citys history. From the start of the citys automotive sector in the 1840s to today, the Museum provides an all encompassing experience of the city of Detroit, and why it has played an influential part in the nations advancement.
The Detroit Zoo is another wonderful place to visit, and it has an unusual and interesting twist. There are no cages or fences that zoos nearly always use. The zoo, from creation, was purposely formed in a way that natural barriers sequester the environments of the thousands of animals kept here, some extinct in the wild already.
