DaytonThough it is by no means a shining example of American commercial, economic, or governmental power, the Ohioan city of Dayton has made a name for itself in middle USA as a regional hub for activities ranging from cultural exhibitions to extreme sports competitions. In decades prior to the year 2000, Dayton was your typical mini-metropolis making every attempt to retain its lovable charm, yet remain situated in the direct path of the world's push toward technological advancement. More or less having reached those goals, Dayton unfortunately had to quickly cap its exuberance thereafter, for the elections to take place months after the new millennium commenced brought a large spotlight on the state of Ohio that is now spoken of as both a curse and a blessing. Walk the streets of central Dayton and you'll never come across curbside bickering between left- and right-wingers, but tension and drama continue to linger, particularly inside the district surrounding City Hall. If politics aren't your cup of tea, and you'd rather fill your thoughts with images of parkland and museum displays, there are plenty of sites to grab your attention. Parks? There seems to be a dozen at the least in Dayton. If a broad body of water coupled with an equally lengthy piece of woodland sounds fanciful, Eastwood Metro Park is a perfect escape. Though your peaceful moments amongst the birds and squirrels may occasionally be disrupted by a passing collection of railcars (Dayton is the site of a major transit depot), a bit of solitude is not as hard to come by as one might expect. Since 1796, Dayton has held its industrial sector above all others. As you roam about the cityscape this becomes ever so evident, but if smokestacks are red flags on your travel checklist, don't turn your back on this city so quickly. Turn a few corners. Turn over a few stones. Pay a visit to Dayton's Art Institute. Ancient artifacts are also no less numerous in the city's own than those found in some of the most prized collections around the globe. Everything in Dayton adds up to be a great experience, so why miss it? Book your flight today!
When to go:
We recommend a visit to Dayton in spring, if only to see the beautiful collages around nearly every street corner, alongside every pathway and inside every garden the city's parks hold. Also, spring showers rarely cause hindrances in travel plans. If you're one for taking precautions, check with weather authorities before your arrival.
Getting there and around:
Dayton International Airport is a popular regional airport. Offering a nearly equal number of flights as that of its sibling inside Columbus, the capital of Ohio, Dayton International is easily accessible from east coast cities such as Portland, New York, and Miami. Departures hold the same measure of simplicity. Of course, you cannot have a major travel hub and neglect to outfit its own local network with praiseworthy transit service. Dayton's bus service is efficient and the prevalence of stops is a commuter's delight. If suburban travel seems enticing to you, consider a car rental.
Attractions:
If you've taken in a good share of canvas art and would like some immersion in displays of carbon-dated remains, the may be the ideal place to spend an afternoon. Whether the dazzle of a laser show or a hands-on physics experiment sounds appealing, the has a multitude of attractions for all ages.
