Dalaman

Sequestered in a luck green mountainous region of Turkey, with a portion of town hugging the beautiful Dalyan River, Dalaman is a destination unlike those typically visited in this country. Not many people live in Dalaman, and among them, most are farmers, or have some part in the Turkish agricultural business. Looking around, youll be surrounded by lush foliage, few roads to get you to places in town, and what may seem like a lack of basic accommodations. But it is easy to make the most of the beautiful, undeveloped land of Dalaman and make your visit to southern-Turkey quite memorable and rewarding.

When to go:

The best time of year to visit turkey is spring. The weather is almost perfect nearly all the time, and moderate temperatures and long days are great conditions to explore the land. Also, youre just about guaranteed to avoid the tourist rush that comes in summer! If you cant make it in spring, we suggest traveling during the autumn season, which is similar to spring in daily temperatures, although it does rain more and the days arent as long. We do suggest avoiding summer and winter if possible.

Getting there and around:

Flights arrive at Dalaman Airport, which is a hub to Dalaman and the surrounding towns of Marmaris, Dalyan, Kas, Fethiye and a few others. You may rent a car at the airport, which we do recommend. This will enable you to travel worry-free and not be tied down by any transit schedules, and you can reach places you may normally not have been able to reach otherwise.

If you do choose to travel with public transit, use the bus system, as it is the most reliable and follows a set schedule which you can plan your days around.

Attractions:

There may not be many sights to see in town, but Dalaman has many activities which may interest you. We did say that the land was beautiful, and we werent kidding. There are ideal places to take great hikes which can hours, or days; however you choose to do it. You can ride a bike (we recommend bringing your own, because youll be trying hard to find a bike to rent, never mind a good one) through the streets, and the winding hills around the beautiful farmland. Its the perfect place to spend a day wheeling around the roads with only the sounds of occasional cars passing by and your bicycle. However, if you do choose to cycle or hike, we do suggest you bring a raincoat or poncho of some sort in case of rain.

The people in town are friendly; however, they do tend to keep to themselves. Plus, there are some great places to take a rest from the days activities and have a bite to eat at one of the many wonderful eateries. Much of the food served is organic and even grown nearby so, not to worry, you can eat healthy too!

If youre into some more activities, such as kayaking, or whitewater rafting, or even going on safari, visit Dalyan, a town close by. If you choose to go on safari, be prepared for an extraordinary day. Pack your bags and hop in the jeep and swim in the freshwater lake along the way, take a stroll around a ruined village, have lunch at a quality restaurant built on top of a river (thats right, on top of a river!), and visit a beautiful secluded beach. Of course, in between those activities youll be driving through streams, shallow rivers, muddy roads, and rocky hills, so youll definitely be getting your share of excitement and rushes of adrenaline.
