Corpus ChristiOnly a few hundred miles from southernmost portion of the US/Mexico border, the stunning coastal-Texas city of Corpus Christi is a welcome vision among the abundance of cattle grounds, horse ranches, and flats which surround the few snippets of land inhabited by high-rises and armies of air-conditioning units. One of the most striking aspects of Corpus Christi to immediate catch one's eye is its connection to two bays. Though Nueces Bay would certainly seem to fit better with a "lake" designation, we say: the more water, the better. Particularly in such a place infested with heat it's nice to know respite is, at most, a few miles away. Responsibilities of operating a chief Texan port have fallen on the people of Corpus Christi, which for all intents and purposes do seem to make up the majority of the city's industrial and trade sectors. Amidst the economically vital activity not associated with travel agencies in Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays, you will find plenty to whet and satisfy any cravings for sites of interest to tourists. Possibly the most recognizable object in town, the USS Lexington is a semi-retired aircraft carrier on which both kids and adults can practice their Top Gun slang. However, if hands-on interaction with a juggernaut of steel doesn't seem to float your boat, you can opt for some down time on some of the finest stretches of sand present on the southern coast of the US.
When to go:
We'd like nothing more than to divulge that the seasons of southern Texas are analogous to beds of roses. Unfortunately, because of the region's susceptibility to tropical storms brought about by the Gulf of Mexico's climatic cycle, the months ordinarily though ideal for vacationing here are prone to disturbances ranging from drizzles to hurricanes of great magnitudes. If you find a pocket available for a visit in spring, we recommending taking it, as this season (autumn slips into this category as well) offers Corpus Christi warmth without any midday intensity and evening strolls with the added bonus of cool gusts coming off the bay.
Getting there and around:
Appropriately dubbed Corpus Christi International Airport, the terminal has made room for both domestic and foreign carriers since its inception. Not too far from the city's main hotel grounds, only a short bus ride will be necessary for transport; taxis, to us, seem a wasted expensive in area. You can go by public transit, or you can rent a vehicle of your own. Whether you're hopeless in reading linear graphs or enjoy nothing more than being the one behind the wheel, you'll find choices for any comfort level.
Attractions:
It may be an odd sight to see in the deep American south - or something so unique to the area that you find it refreshing - but Corpus Christi's Asian Cultures Museum & Educational Center is possibly the most intriguing 10,000 sq-ft exhibit hall in a few hundred-miles radius. Complete with an ornate 5-foot-tall Buddha statue, authentic Singapore taxi, and a bounty of theatre garments, this establishment is a definite must-see. Though it is home to temperatures that few places within the US rarely get to see as well, Corpus Christi's position among large bodies of water has enabled it the luxury of forming one of the most splendidly beautiful botanical gardens of the coastal United States. Wetlands have provided the landscape for this oasis of sorts, where tropical plants seem to outnumber those of domestic origins. A small art gallery is present on garden grounds, where you can see the works by local artists only.
