Corfu

Something of an island paradise with a tinge of rustic Grecian architecture, Corfu exists as one of the premier Ionian Islands, and theres no doubt why more than a million visitors a year flock to this haven of havens. Youll be swept away by the picturesque views from the fortresses, and even just walking through Corfu Town, or relaxing on one of the many beaches, or taking a drive down a beautifully wooded dirt road, youll get the sense that youre in a special place, where life is a little easier, a little simpler, and I think its safe to say that youll be hard pressed to leave the island of Corfu.

When to go:

The most perfect month of year to visit is June, particularly early June, but if you book your flight for early summerMay to Juneyoull be pleasantly surprised by the amount of sunlight, warm air, and calm breezes that youre sure to encounter. We say this only because Corfu is known to have lots of rainfall throughout the year, as are all the Ionian Islands, and early summer is typically the time when the weather lets up the most.

Getting there and around:

Not far from Corfus capital, Corfu Town, Corfu Airport offers all the services you would expect from a highly frequented international destination. To get to Corfu Airport, one must usually travel from Athens (although there are a number of direct international flight arrivals), and the same goes for departing flights. Getting into the heart of Corfu is simple with your choice of taxi, local bus, mini-bus, or car rental. We recommend renting a car, simply because we think youll enjoy being able to get up and go whenever you wish, and if youre walking alone by the fortresses or some other place, itd be nice to have a shelter from unexpected weather that may arrive.

Attractions:

There is a wonderful village in Corfu known as Kassiopi, which dates back to Roman times. Youll find everything you need here, with cafs, shops, and restaurants, with a look and feel of periods past-some Hellenistic, some Roman, some Venetian, and even hint of Byzantine.

Corfus Archaeological Museum is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Inside, youll almost immediately notice the Stone Lion, which actually dates back to 575 B.C. It was found in a nearby tomb, very close to the museum. Walking around the lion will bring you to a room completely outfitted with displays of temple sculpture and the pediment to the ancient Temple of Artemis (which can be found not far from Corfu Town). Both archaeology and architecture buffs will love no doubt love this museum.

The Museum of Asian Art is a beautiful place to visit. When you arrive on site, youll immediately be captivated by the neoclassical architecture. Originally constructed as the residence for the British ruler of the Ionian Islands, it now houses collections of art, sculpture, and ceramics, from the Shang Dynasty to the Ching Dynasty, some pieces dating back more than 3500 years. It may be unusual to see prized Chinese relics on a Grecian island, but youll be pleasantly surprised by how wonderful your visit is.

The Old Fort (Paleo Frourio), located on the Esplanade, is a wonderful place to see some good architecture and even better views. There are two peaks which give great views, and a moat, which is quite interesting to see. If youre not interested in seeing a British fort on a Greek island, we suggest you come during the summer, because even if youre not in it for the views, you can experience some of the sound and light shows which are held here numerous times a week.
