Colorado Springs

A quaint suburbanite haven at an elevation of 6,000+ feet, Colorado Springs has been a vacationer and retiree mecca, one where right-leaning conservatives and U.S. Air Force personnel appear to coexist quite amiably (even hand-in-hand, in some cases). Bubbling geysers about 3 or 4 miles from the city center have been the main factors for Colorado Springs's increase in population from the moment of its founding in 1871. Coupled with brisk mountain air, health scientists continually enamor this area of the US with praise for its alleged healing qualities - much the same as those found in portions of Europe and upon exotic-looking landmasses further north. At the start, Colorado Springs was secret only locals were fortunate enough to hold dear to. However, when word got out (or passersby began to notice; always up for debate) a steady increase in residents began to shape the city to become what it is today: a gem upon the face of the Rocky Mountains with Pike's Peak watching guard. Though gold rush memorabilia can indeed be found in at least a single museum in this generously spaced complex of McMansions, it is factually unique for being one of few places in the state which did not take part in the frenzies to take place in the late 1800s. Always to put comfort before showmanship, Colorado Springs is content to play a quiet life in a world of hype and star attractions. If you do happen to come to this city, rarely will you find its natural baths crowded with well-wishers. Of course, the people of this western US oasis would like to keep some measure of tranquility present here, so keep your lips sealed, don't reveal your plans for a stay among snowcapped summits to too many confidantes, and book your flight to Colorado Springs today!

When to go:

Colorado Springs's stance upon a mountainside does in fact have something to do with the once-in-a-while oddball weather pattern that passes through the area. Doused in mounds and mounds of snowflakes between November and March, the winters of the Rockies are nothing if not splendidly white. Seemingly carrying on longer than their designated cutoff points, this season brings busloads of beanie-wearing powder surfers (not in any way related to substance abuse, mind you - at least in our sense of the term(s)) hoping to catch a few minutes in the magical tubs CS provides to their achy muscles and bruised bottoms (again, from errors on the slopes, not particularly because of strange spanking fetishes). Come to Colorado Springs in springs, summer, and autumn and you'll save yourself from bearing any more of our questionable comments. Oh, the weather's fine too - at least for the majority of the remaining 273 1/4 days of the year!

Getting there and around:

Supporting neighborhoods far from the limits of the bubbling bed, Colorado Springs Airport services an average of 100 flights per day. The terminal offers a number of extra provisions, one of which should be mandatory for all visitors: car rentals. Not at all unreasonably to discover major holes in a mountain town's public transit service, it's best to go about the grid on your own or with either the aid of a friend or a compact map...or both.

Attractions:

With the tip of Pike's Peak clouded from view on occasion, one's impulses are usually geared toward the unfamiliar - in this case, the summit. If the inclination to conquer the 14, 110 feet to the mountain's crown - however trodden it may be - beseeches you to discard all the day's plans, throw on a pack and set out for tree hugging and moments with streams and small crevasses. Though the rules of life in Colorado Springs are fairly simplistic, the city does have a few nooks and crannies for the sophisticated in the Art Guild. The Guild's Fireplace Gallery is a small but fitting home for local artists to display pieces recent and aged.
