ClevelandKnown for its music scene and being home to highly regarded institutions in the rock genre, Cleveland sports modernism and culturally rich neighborhoods, along with a booming tourism industry fueled by the eclectic mixes of artistry, ethnicity, and musicianship. It is a wonderfully revitalized and uplifted Ohio city with grand attractions, which have made it a premier destination for both domestic and international travelers.
When to go:
Temperatures in Cleveland are typical for its location in the hemisphere. Summer days can reach as high as 85F (30C), and it can get as cold as 30F (-1C). Rainfall is average. Your best bet in experiencing the most of Cleveland, is to visit during the warmer months, when more people are out and about, and theres more of a chance of catching some great street art/music in progress.
Getting there and around:
Youll be arriving at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which is about 18km from the city centre, so youre going to have to find some fast and easy transportation (easy=cheap). The RTA (Regional Transit Authority) is a good option to go with, since departures from the airport leave frequently (every 15 minutes). The RTA runs to Tower City Center and will take you about 20 minutes. There is also a Downtown Loop bus system, and of course taxis and car rentals are also available, albeit at a higher cost to you.
Attractions:
A great way to take in the city in a short period of time, as an overview, or a quick tour, would be to take Lolly the Trolley. Quite a peculiar name, yes? Its quite fun though, and you get to see many attractions, with either the 1 or 2 hour versions (1-hour version concentrates on downtown, while 2-hour version give you an all encompassing experience of Cleveland as a whole).
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo may seem like just any ordinary zoo, but theres one exhibita huge exhibitthat is worth the visit all by itself. It is the multilevel rainforest exhibit, and it is a real spectacle, with 600 animals living within its confines and a rainbow of insects and such from all 7 continents. Its wonderful to witness the simulated rainstorm in the makeshift biosphere.
The Cleveland Museum of Art is also a great place to visit, with extraordinary pieces showcased. The Museum holds a piece by Picasso, not quite as famous as his others, yet still a marvel, /La Vie/. Among the visitors to the museum, many view one of the greatest highlights to be the grand Monet canvas of water lilies. There are many more permanent and temporary exhibits to see as well, all of which make a visit to the Museum of Art well worth it.
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History should be another location on your to see list. A favorite attraction in the Museum is the spherical Shafran Planetarium. Both kids and adults love it. The museum also boasts a great stone and jewelry section, and a prehistoric annex devoted mostly to the Ohio area.
Another attraction, designed by I.M. Pei, is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum building. Built with glass and porcelain in a pyramid shape, the architecture itself is something to see. But inside, youll see why Cleveland rocks. It has everything you can imagine devoted entirely to the rock genre. With state-of-the-art exhibits, theatres, and archives, both the Hall of Fame and Museum will captivate you. There is a Jimi Hendrix Surround Sound Theatre and Exhibit; guitars, handwritten lyrics, and clothing all showcased in a watercolor landscape setting.
