CincinnatiCincinnati may be a large city with people darting to and fro, streets busy with buses, taxis, cars and trucks, and lots of skyscrapers too, but it is also said to have a small-town feel to it, and that is undeniably true. Its attractive, there are a lot of cultural sites all around, and its location is great. On one side, there is the beautiful Ohio River, and close by are the hills of Mount Adams. You get beautiful views, wonderful people, and lots of fun activities and places to go. After all, Cincinnati was dubbed the most beautiful inland city in the US by Winston Churchill.
When to go:
Cincinnati is gorgeous in the summertime. The days are long, the suns out most of the time, and the temperature almost never goes above 85F (29C). Autumn is a nice time to visit as well, although it might be a little chilly. The beautiful colors of the trees set the citys appearance very nicely. And if you like snow, and a lot of it, winters your time of year, and you can even go up to Mount Adams for some beautiful sights of the city and the hills around.
Getting there and around;
Dont fear when you arrive at the airport and see a Welcome to Kentucky sign. The airport is situated at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky border, which is why it is labeled The Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport. Lots of international and domestic flights arrive and depart from here, from many carriers, so youll find it easy to catch a good deal on a flight over here.
Getting into the city is simple. Just choose from one of three options: the TANK (Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky), JetPort Express shuttle service, or a flat fee taxi. The TANK only has two stops in downtown Cincinnati. JetPort Express runs to primary hotels in downtown Cincinnati only, and taxis runwellto many locations all over the city. Choose wisely!
Theres only one way we recommending getting around the city, and that is via the Queen City Metro. Cincinnatis public buses are great, cheap, quick (except in rush hour), and are the least-hassle option. If youre by the Ohio River, you can take a riverboat cruise, or a ferry. Or if youre feeling in a romantic or old-fashioned mood, find a carriage in downtown.
Attractions:
Downtown is a great place to start your excursions. You can start at the Carew Tower, where, from the gallery at the top you can see the whole city (youll notice that, for a city, Cincinnati has an unusually large number of parks). At night its wonderful to see the city alive with lights. Right next-door to the Tower is Fountain Square where you can enjoy some time just sitting around and watching the people go by. Fountain Square receives a lot of traffic in the summer, since outdoor concertgoers come here to cool down.
The Cincinnati Zoo is a great place to go, especially if its with the whole family involved. The Zoo is known internationally for its collection of endangered species. A few hallmarks of the zoo are gorillas and white tigers. There is a Childrens Zoo area, and a Botanical Garden, with bonsai exhibit, faux desert habitat, a makeshift rainforest, and a walk-through Bird Garden.
Your list of destinations must include the Museum Center as well. Located in what was the Union Terminal rail depot, the museums are in a quite beautiful setting, with original art-deco that was there when the Terminal was first built. The terminal is in fact the largest half-dome building in the world. You may just find yourself admiring the facility the museums here are located in. But on to the museums, the Museum of Natural History and Science is a great place to bring the family too. There is an artificial cavern constructed, with waterfalls, streams, and real big brown bats. The Cincinnati Historical Museum is here as well, with exhibits highlighting the citys part during WWII.
