Chiang Mai

Thailand, an abstract shape touching the south-Asian nations of Myanmar, Laos, and the well-documented landscapes of Vietnam and Cambodia, is where you'll find history and efficiency battling for places in the tomorrows of hemisphere. With a capital famous for its erratic behavior, gridlocked streets, and neighborhoods so tightly conjoined they're nearly deemed inseparable, it's somewhat hard to find reason for visiting such a city - offering a similar experience found in China's capital, albeit on a relatively smaller scale. There is hope for the Tai, however, and it relies far north of Bangkok. Chiang Mai, roughly the size of Tai capital, very surprisingly, lacks the immense crowdedness notorious of such closely laid metropolis-like networks. Don't get us wrong; nearly everything about Chiang Mai is strictly of a business note. But though city planners have had an open mind for accepting the region's push for advancement in the 21st century, they've cordoned the city's ancient sites off-limits to new development. At least for some time, that is. Do yourself a favor and make a trip to Chiang Mai to see the brilliance while it lasts. Finding fault in Tai efforts toward equality in the flattening world is a wasted effort. After all, such is the goal of the global society.

When to go:

Only a few hundred miles from both the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, Chiang Mai is dealt greatly fluctuating climatic conditions. Though weather authorities the world over have seen accuracies in their forecasts rise significantly in recent years, there are always room for surprises. Northern Thailand is lucky to receive less heated summers than places south, however, with valleys and mountain ranges affixed to portions of the region, whether you are located further from or closer to the equator, humidity will be an ever-present factor in your dealings here. If you find yourself with a sunless stay, consider yourself lucky. The sun over Thailand makes for disastrous vacationing experiences for much of the year.

Getting there and around:

With its close proximity to the Tai border, not at all difficult to see why Chiang Mai was apportioned such an abundance array of international connections, particularly to/from its airport. In addition to the wealth of inter-Asian flights, you'll find a few from eastern European nations, though if you're presently residing in the UK, lucky you will be to find a direct flight to Chiang Mai. Recent major developments in Chiang Mai brought a great increased in commuter numbers, which the city has had a bit of trouble integrating a revised and expanded public transit system to. Though the amount of personal vehicles is rising in Thailand, most travelers still pedal their way about their days; an example visitors are recommended to follow. (Note: Public transit is not found in the ordinary form (buses). Instead, you'll find Songtao's (covered pickups) to replace those rolling cartons, as well as Tuk-Tuk's (motorized scooters) to serve customers going short distances.)

Attractions:

Whether you're here for business, trekking the South Asian continent, or simply enjoy vacationing in foreign cities, the best place to start your discovery of Chiang Mai is in its central district, a.k.a., the Old City. Encapsulated by an ancient moat rejuvenated in the 19th century, as well as wall, crumbling in places, yet stand quite tall in others, the Old City is built around a square neatly establishing the four cardinal directions while holding unique architectural creations - as well as a few tourist traps (shops, foods with exorbitant costs, etc.) all too familiar in cities such as this around the world. Chiang Mai National Museum is a descent establishment to get your eyes focused on the big picture of Thailand's past and the evolution of local traditions. Providing more fascinating, in-depth, and personal chronologies are the temples Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. The former is a 15th century wonder, while the latter is more a testament to significant happenings in the nation's history than a visual masterpiece.
