Chattanooga

The Tennessee-based city of Chattanooga, a coalition of grid-oriented streets in the midst of formerly lush farmland, is the locale for southeastern US flavors and family-friendly fun. Inside its center you will find a great array of museums packed with exciting interactive exhibits, as well as historic structures too many to count and one of the premier scholar hubs in the region. Tourists will love the features Chattanooga's Visitors Center boasts, and the view from within and without the city's limits are worthy of praise as well.

When to go:

Though you can save a bundle by forgoing any reliance on your impulses and obtaining a package deal or two to see the city's most popular attractions, you can further your goal of getting your money's worth by traveling outside the late-spring-to-summer season. Generally known as the point of highest activity in Chattanooga, you'll miss any chance of crowdedness and lose not an ounce of goodness from restaurants, museums, and any other places deemed fit for the average-visitor mold.

Getting there and around:

Serving many cities and towns within the greater metropolitan area, Chattanooga Airport is a short way from Atlanta by air, which, in many cases is the best route to travel for Europeans coming to the southern states. National airlines dominate the terminals here, though a few foreign carriers have been known to dock occasionally. Just as simple - or even easier, if possible - is making your way through the city itself. Comprised mostly of a parallel and perpendicular layout, Chattanooga proves to be one of the most basic centers in the state. Travel inside its borders by bus, taxi, or a rented vehicle; the differences are minimal, and focusing on cost-cutting measures is nary detrimental to one's visit.

Attractions:

Though it is rather small in size, Chattanooga has large body of intriguing sites to show for it. Being away from the sea doesn't mean you have to give up the world of aquatics entirely. You can spend a few hours inside the Tennessee Aquarium on Broad St for some one-on-one access with underwater creatures living comfortably inside the world's largest standalone tank. Not only are locally found species thriving in the environments created here (in fact, only few can be found roaming the landscape beyond Chattanooga's borders), but tropical splendors from across the globe have made house here as well. Located near to the aquarium is the Creative Discovery Museum, a concoction of child-focused exhibits to hands-on interactivity that will fascinate adults is found inside this establishment, complete with artists' workshops and musical studios. If you'd wish to dabble extensively in the artistic world, there's no better place in town to go than Bluff View Art District. Both the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts and the Hunter Museum of American Art can be accessed from within this small area. The former specializes in glass pieces; the latter attempts an all-in-one collection and emerges with an above-average rating. With Lookout Mountain just a few miles from the activity of downtown, you'll find the convenient proximity to the Incline Railway, Ruby Falls, Rock City Gardens, and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum all too good to miss.
