Cancun
Cancun, a paradise located in the Yucatan Peninsula, is a hub for tourists and travelers. Its a great place for anyone looking for an exotic experience with all the amenities and utilities and comforts one may need for a pleasant vacation or getaway. Formed as a city and port roughly a century ago, it later became a hotspot for vacationers. The excitement lasts year-round and you can enjoy Cancun on both a high and low budget.
When to go:
In Cancun, the weather is amazing. Its usually 80F (27C) all year long, while sometimes dipping to 65F (19C) for a few chilly days in January. When it gets hot, the oceans breeze makes the day perfect. If you wish to encounter fewer tourists during your stay, and maybe enjoy a little more peace and quiet we suggest visiting during the late fall/early winter months of November and December.
Getting there and around:
Cancun International Airport is quite close to the city, and serves many carriers from many destinations. Which means getting there is a piece-of-cake, and getting into the heart of Cancun is even easier, leaving you with more time to enjoy your stay. Minivans and special cars can take you into the city, but we think youre better off hailing a taxi, since theyre cheaper and not struck with airport-related surcharges and fees like the designated airport vehicles.
There are two main ways of getting around Cancun. You can rent a car, or take a bus. Cancuns bus system is very efficient and buses do travel from the Ciudad (city) to the Isla (island) frequently. Renting a car is another option, but that would only be absolutely necessary for trips deep into the Yucatan region.
Where to go:
When you think of Cancun, you think beaches and warm water and crisp, clean air, so your first destination should be Isla Cancun. Its a great place to lie down and spend a lazy day just basking in the warm sun and taking a dip in the Caribbean.
Another Island, only accessible by boat though, is Isla Mujeres, where youll notice more of a tropical, exotic landscape setting. You can do some great diving, and see one-or even all-of four reefs off the islands coast: Los Manchones, La Bandera, Cuevones, and Chital. There are also the ruins of a Mayan Temple on the island, and some great caves known as the Sleeping Shark Caves. Creatures such as sharks are known to live in the area (hence the name), but usually they are quite harmless because of the low oxygen levels in the water. There are some nice beaches here as well, although they arent as secluded as they used to be.
Cancun has a good museum too, the Museo de Antropologia y Historia). Its pleasing for the average traveler, but an archaeology buff will be somewhat disappointed with the collections of artifacts on display. The museum houses jewelry, masks, deformed skulls, all from the Postclassic Period. There is a fascinating hieroglyphic staircase inscribed with dates at the museum as well.
