Cairns
Cairns, or Cairns City, as it is known by many, is a small Australian port town with a big heart, long history, and a booming tourism sector. With fantastic views making Cairns look like a pastel wonderland, the city is the perfect place for adventure and to experience wonderful nature walks, strolls along the waterfront, and visits to uninhabited islands.
When to go:
We suggest visiting Cairns in the spring and autumn, particularly the months closest to the Australian summer, because the weather is absolutely perfect at that time of year. This will ensure you crisp, clear views of the Cairns landscape and islands, and allow you nearly worry-free daily excursions through town, or to the reefs for great diving or even relaxing on the secluded beaches.
Getting there and around:
Your flight will arrive at Cairns Airport and its just a quick ride to downtown Cairns City on the Australian Coach. This transportation service runs everyday, all day, and runs both to and from the airport, ensuring you quick and easy transportation at arrival and at the end of your stay in Cairns. You may also choose to take a taxi to your destination, though that may be unnecessary depending on where you are staying.
When youve become situated in your room and accommodations, and youre ready to do some sight-seeing, you may be wonderful how youll be getting around. But no worry, getting around Cairns is very easy. The city itself is quite small, and many attractions are in walking distance of each other. However, if your desire is to go somewhere of reasonably far distance, renting a car will allow you to see Cairns attractions on your own timetable. Where to go:
Cairns offers a wide range of destinations and activities to choose from, ranging from scuba diving to the botanical gardens, and even, if youre up for it, some gambling at Cairns magnificent Casino. Nightlife is vibrant, the energy doesnt die down for hours, and there are plenty of piano bars, karaoke lounges, and nightclubs which you can hear from blocks away.
A visit to downtown Cairns will bring you to the citys shopping hub. The streets are lined with shops selling everything from antiques to clothing to exclusive merchandise from the Queensland region.
Walk along the Cairns Esplanade and take part in some of the recreational activities sure to be going on. There is a swimming lagoon, public art for all to see and enjoy, beautiful landscaping and much more. Its a beautiful are to take a stroll through or even stop to enjoy some down time and possibly a nice little picnic.
Visit the Flecker Botanical Gardens and youll see a beautiful sanctuary of exotic species of plants, some even carnivorous, all superbly maintained. There are even a caf and restaurant on the premises; a perfect setting for a lunchtime meal. The Botanical Gardens are quite expansive, allowing you to spend the whole day if you wish, with spaces allowing you to rest a while or even read a book. Note: insects are plentiful in the Gardens, so you may want to carry repellent with you.
The Great Barrier Reef, located off of Cairns, is an amazing destination you must visit during your stay. No picture or movie can do the reefs justice, only experiencing it yourself will show you the true wonder of it all. Diving will give you the chance to see beautiful aquatic plants, animals, and other life, and the vibrant colors contrasting with the amazingly clean water is really something to marvel at. Youll think youre in a dream! A visit to the Reef will take some time though, up to an hour travel time each way, and be sure to bring the essentials: sunblock, swimsuit, change of clothing, and a camera with plenty of film.
