BurbankHome to many of America's syndicated television shows, including the nationally-syndicated talk program The Late Show with Jay Leno, Burbank, California, is where many of LA's stars and starlets have taken of residence, attracted to its far less crowded atmosphere and beautiful views. Burbank is a city seemingly unaffected by Hollywood - for the most part, anyhow. You will find mansions dotting its hills, but even in its downtown area you won't come across clouds of smog that are so notoriously ever-present in its much larger, much busier, and flatter neighbor. Older generations of film actors are those who tend to find Burbank appealing, where police rarely swarm around town looking for troublesome youth gone awry. Because of it's somewhat "every town" personality, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes it so special and worthwhile for tourists. We suspect its appeal lies in its trendy boulevards populated by upscale boutiques, the proximity to park grounds, and the spectacles of exotic automobiles driven by celebrities headed for unemployment offices in between picture roles. If glimpses of the high life are what you crave, Burbank is, all in all, equitable to LA, minus the sparkle, glitziness, and any other blatant reminder of show business.
When to go:
Home to a very similar climate as that of Los Angeles - due mostly to its closeness with the movie mecca - Burbank provides a warm blanket for its residents and guests for the majority of the year. Californian winters are relative to location. In the state's northern sectors, cities receive many inches of snow every year, whereas in places further south - Burbank, Los Angeles, etc. - the most chilling effects to come are those brought by long stints of rain. Many of Burbank's visitors enjoy tours of studios run by Warner Bros., NBC, CBS, and Universal, and these organizations tend to favor hosting such services during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when walking their enterprises' premises is not agitated by a burdensome sun.
Getting there and around:
Burbank shares an airport with two fellow mini-cities, Glendale and Pasadena, but even though it's roster is far from matching that of LAX, you'll come to find it quite adequate for regional travel. Fliers from cities within Europe will find it much easier to book a flight to Los Angeles rather than search for the all-but-nonexistent connection to Burbank, and with both cities situated close to one another, a bus, taxi, or car ride to/from LAX is all that is needed. While Burbank does hold its congestion issues - albeit minor ones, you're best off renting a car for your stay. The chances of catching the traffic bug are always present, but by no other means can you avail yourself to so many options.
Attractions:
Auto enthusiasts will love visiting Burbank's NBC Studios, if only for the opportunity to catch a few peeks at Jay Leno's pick-of-the-day for a commuter vehicle. Will it be a 50's Chevrolet, or possibly a steel bullet with a warplane engine fashion to its carriage? Tours of the sets are available for a fee at certain points of the day. Warner Bros. Studios has also put up shop in Burbank, but live cartoon characters performing giant leaps or dodging falling anvils, sadly, cannot be seen.
