Destination Guide - Belize City, Belize

Belize City, Belize

What was once the capital city of Belize and what still is the transportation hub of the country, Belize City is one locale in the Caribbean that can certainly be overlooked as a destination among the traveling world. The citys few sites are clouded and dirtied by the traffic that flows through its streets, only to be temporarily cleaned and washed away by the seemingly-routine tropical storm to pass overhead. Nevertheless, travelers come in great numbers to this city, if not to stay here but simply for an adjoining train or bus en route to their final destination. Indeed some of those passing through grow curious about this heavily trodden transit center, and while many find it overpriced, overwhelming, and unfriendly, the ruggedness and unstable foot of Belize City appeal to a select few. Take a step outside the terminal in while you stand and pace through some of the citys outdoor market and maybe even obtain a recommendation on a good eatery for an afternoon energy boost while youre out and about. Whatever your reason for visiting Belize City, be it for transportation or as a stop on a detoured excursion through Belize, stay a while and see what doors open for you in Belize City.

When to go

Belize certain has a definite high-season, marked almost exclusively within the months of winter and spring, but Belize Citys hotels rarely fill with enough visitors to give the impression that the former-capital can associate with the rest of the country in relation to traveler interest. What Belize City does share in is the countrys climate patterns, and while the streets many not be filled with souvenir-wielding tourists, during the summer and autumn months the city is soaked and oftentimes flooded with rain. A high point to traveling during this half of the year is that nearly everything is discounted, apart from transit fares of course.

Getting there and around

Though Belize City may not be the favored destination among travelers, it is still the location where the countrys main international airport resides. Most travel to Belize is reserved for connections from North America, particularly those originating from or departing to locations in the southern states. Central American connections exist as well, and while the flight numbers from European cities to Belize are nothing to boast about, they are steadily growing.

Travel

around the city and most other locations in Belize is shared between buses, trains and personal vehicles. Taxis are few, and if you cant afford to rent a vehicle (prices for these services can be quite high, especially during peak season) travel by bus is the next best solution.

Attractions

Though Belize City may not be able to boast about quiet, sandy beaches like much of the countrys other locations, it still has a number of token sites that are definitely worth a look.

Make your way to Belize Zoo, where birds are the main attractions, and care for endangered species is among the best in the region. Once youre done mingling with the parakeets you can stop by St Johns Cathedral, the oldest Anglican Church in Central America for some wonderful traditional architecture. A visit to the Museum of Belize should surely be on your itinerary here as well, with its comprehensive collection of artifacts and paintings of both local and international findings.
