Belfast

From grandeur to squalor and back again, Belfast is a city that has undergone great chances ever since its conception. Many of its buildings have seen massive renovations, a number of which have far outclassed what stood before them. Though Belfast has not completely eradicated the turmoil and tension that afflicted the city streets, you will no longer see armored tanks prowling the grid. This is not to say that you shouldnt keep your wits about you; it is by no means the safest city in Europe, but you can assuredly walk around Belfast without having to look over your shoulder at every turn. Give the city a spin: take a ride to the city center and follow the beautiful River Lagan to any one of many fascinating sites along the way. Pay a visit to Cathedral Quarter, where youll come upon one of the citys most recognizable and best architectural creations, interestingly surrounded by a peculiar mix of restaurants, shops, and bars. Come to Belfast for a chance to see the continued revival of Irish roots and flavor. Book your flight today!

When to go:

Belfast isnt a city keen to encountering any heat waves (one is more likely to catch a chill than to sizzle here). People interested and drawn to the quarters of this city tend to enjoy carrying layers upon layers of attire, but this is not to say that Belfast doesnt enjoy some sunshine and warmth. Summers bring the daily temperatures in the city up to 60F, while winters, though lacking in snowfall or any frigid conditions of any sort, bring regular lows of 40F. As one whos traveled to Northern Ireland can attest, the most drastic change of the year is not a shift in the mercury readings, but one of precipitation. You can rarely go a week in Belfast without the use of an umbrella or raincoat at one point or another. This, of course, leads many to consider Belfast analogous to dreary. Dont be discouraged. When the sun breaks through, Belfast truly shines.

Getting there and around:

Travel from UK, Europe, North America, and Asia is rather easy by way of Belfast International Airport. The citys domestic airport also sees a good number of flights not only from the likes of Dublin and Cork, but from locations in Great Britain as well. Both airports are home to terminals serving up the essentials to travelers, though the larger of the two showcases a greater variety of shops, restaurants, and banking services. Car rental agencies are present at both as well, but no matter which airport you may be arriving at, taking the appropriate measures for parking and such becomes a burden almost immediately.

While taxis and buses are available anywhere in Belfast, if youre in the city center, youll want to forgo these services for the chance to walk from site to site. If youre expecting a wonderfully warm string of days during your stay, we suggest renting a bicycle to get you from place to place. Many of Belfasts sites are just a short ride from one another, and nothings quite like enveloping yourself in the city atmosphere as you go about your day.

Attractions:

Emerging from the Industrial Revolution as a fantastic depiction of Renaissance architecture, Belfasts City Hall is beautifully adorned by marble floors and stained-glass windows as well as portraits of every lord mayor of the city to walk the hallways here. Free tours are available on arrival or by phoned appointment.

If youd like to get away from the cityscape a bit, you can make your way to the Botanical Gardens, where youll find an expansive place to take in some fresh air, flower collages, and, if youre in the mood for a little discovery while youre here, the Ulster Museum lies on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens.
