Austin

Austin may not be an internationally recognized hotbed for cultural activity, but locals, and Texans in general, know quite well what this city holds in store for the public every year. Playing host to one of the largest annual music festivals in the US, Austin is as easy on the ears as it is on the eyes. You can hop on the club train and see a number of rock and roll or country groups performing on any given night, or you can board an historic rail tour for beautiful views of the countryside. What sets Austin apart from other tourist-friendly cities in the south is its casual atmosphere. Vendors dont hawk souvenirs to unwilling buyers and youll have to gain some street smarts during your stay in order to see the best of Austin. Ask around for a recommendation on the best local bar, or ditch the big museum plans for a few visits to small galleries around town. Take your experience in the city into your own hands and make your memories of Texas in Austin.

When to go:

Because Austin doesnt necessarily have a designated high-season, you can come anytime and get the same wholesome experience it offers to visitors throughout the calendar year. Apart from the frenzy surrounding the South by Southwest music festival, Austin is, wellAustin! If youd like to avoid baking temperatures, take our word for it and avoid summer. Spring and autumn are both wonderful seasons for a visit to Austin, what with being both warm and colorful (spring is the season of the South by Southwest festival). In winter, pedestrians tend to bring out their heavy coats, except for the occasional sunny, spring-like day that emerges over the region.

Getting there and around:

Recently, Austin received a new international flight center. Austin-Bergstrom International, as its known, is home to much of the citys domestic and foreign travel, though its quite common for overseas travelers to arrive at one of several coastal cities before heading over to the south-central US. The terminal is quite large, therefore lone lines are almost never an issue, especially for evening fliers. Buses, taxis, limousines and more transport vehicles are all available for you to choose from.

The best way of getting around town is via Austins efficient Capital Metro system. Public buses run routes that cover all of the citys districts and much of its surrounding suburbs. Also, a few buses running downtown circuits known as the fleet of the Armadillo Express are great for those short museum sprints; best of all, theyre free of charge!

Attractions:

Austins State Capitol, part of the Capitol Complex in the heart of downtown, is not only one of the largest government buildings in the country, but in the world. The structure is complete with a beautiful statue of the Goddess of Liberty at its top. Interestingly enough, the Capitol is overwhelmingly pink with the choice of limestone used in its construction.

For those interested in nightlight, you need not look further than the grounds covered along East 6^th Street. This main avenue of sorts boasts foot traffic rivaling the citys Congress Ave, and here youll find rock and roll, blues, jazz, and hip-hop all coming together under many roofs. For the benefit its attractiveness, the street is closed off to vehicular traffic every weekend for outdoor performances (if weather permits).
