Abidjan

A word who's origin is found within Europe, cosmopolitan is a term that has been used to describe numerous places around the globe since it's inception into the vocabularies of the socially elite everywhere. It's the perfect designation for cities such as New York, Paris, London, Frankfurt, and many others, and in the past few decades it is one which has found it's way to Abidjan, a coastal destination belonging to the African nation of Cote d'Ivoire, a block of land bordering Ghana, Liberia, Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Though international influences are many, - and, mind you, they do stand out, undisguised to the masses - most happen to have brought themselves from neighboring countries. Rarely do travelers notice any European touches inside Abidjan; only the overseas state of France has a noticeable percentage of its people living within Cote d'Ivoire. The capital and Abidjan are where most reside. Like any major city on the African continent, Abidjan has swanky boulevards lined with high-rise, high-price hotels, but marks of poor neighborhoods exist as well. Because its size shows to be nothing of a full-blown metropolis, it's difficult to take in once side without the other. This close-knit layout ensures an all-encompassing journey, with the city's trademark museums there to highlight all historic items of the centuries past. No portion of the grid is uncovered, and when art is in the picture, you can be sure that diversity abounds among the works housed under galleries' roofs. If West Africa sounds an enticing part of the globe to experience on your next trip, consider a visit to Abidjan. With all of the exciting characteristics of a major ocean-side locale minus the inconvenience of excessive crowding, this port city may be just what you're looking for.

When to go:

Just a few dozen miles from the equator, Abidjan is treated to a climate that is hard to beat for those living to the north. Heat is evident much of the year, but couple the sun with little humidity and you'll begin to see why more and more people choose coastal Africa for their vacations. Rain can become a daily hindrance for visitors to Abidjan in summer; you're best off keeping to winter months - between November and February - to give you the driest stretches possible. Winter is often giving the title of high season, though many travelers choose to come in autumn, when they can laze on the beaches without the discomfort of an occasional Atlantic chill. If you're like us and enjoy an uncrowded cityscape, arrange for a flight to Abidjan in the coolest months of the year.

Getting there and around:

Abidjan International Airport sees a good amount of daily traffic, but you'll have a hard time spotting a direct European connection among the flights scheduled. Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire's capital, is where all overseas flights come and go. A short, 60-minutes-or-less trip will get you from the capital to the coast (and vice versa). Minibuses are the main means of travel for all commuters within Cote d'Ivoire's cities, with taxis running a close second.

Attractions:

There are countless things to see and do in Abidjan, naming them all would be a futile task. Roam of the frenzy of downtown and mingle with dozens of peoples inside cafes and public spaces; Take a tour of the coastline and afterwards make your way around the outskirts of the city to grasp the contrast of the suburbs and the inner city. Offer up yourself to Abidjan and it will provide limitless memories to share for generations!
